SpletTiptoft took a leading part in the suppression of the revolt of Rhys ab Mereduc in 1287–8. Rhys's pretext was the compulsory introduction of ‘English customs’ by Tiptoft. Tiptoft took Rhys's chief castle, captured him, and sent him to York, where he was hanged and drawn. Spletinfuriated against Tiptoft that he feared they would have eaten him alive. Caxton's tributes to Tiptoft are numerous and familiar. If the printer is to be trusted, Tiptoft was the most learned man among the English nobility of his time. It is generally overlooked that these tributes cannot be set down to personal friendship.
